Agartala, 23rd October 2026 : Congress leader Samir Sarkar was allegedly attacked with sharp weapons during an orchestra programme in the Madhupur 30 Card locality late Thursday night. Two persons, identified as Balaram Dutta and Akash Dey, have been accused in connection with the incident. Sarkar is currently undergoing treatment at Tripura Medical College and Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital, Hapania.
According to Sarkar, the incident took place around 1 am when he visited an orchestra performance organised by Madhupur Play Centre with his family. While he was purchasing items at a nearby shop with his son, the two accused allegedly attacked him from behind, punching him in the face and attempting to stab him with a knife.
Sarkar further alleged that the attackers threatened to kill him and dispose of his body in a sack. They reportedly fled after his son raised an alarm and police personnel arrived at the scene.
The Congress leader claimed that the attack stemmed from a dispute a few days earlier, when he allegedly confronted the accused over the theft of cattle suspected to be intended for smuggling into Bangladesh. He also alleged that ₹10,000 was stolen from his pocket during the incident.
Sarkar claimed that the accused had links with BJP leaders and were allegedly involved in criminal activities in the area. He further alleged that complaints had previously been lodged against them at Madhupur Police Station and claimed that they had once been apprehended with a pistol. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Following the assault, Sarkar was initially taken to Madhupur Primary Health Centre. As his condition reportedly deteriorated, he was referred to Tripura Medical College and Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital, Hapania for further treatment.
Sarkar has lodged a complaint against Balaram Dutta and Akash Dey at Madhupur Police Station, demanding strict action against the accused. He has also appealed to the Chief Minister to intervene, alleging that the accused have repeatedly escaped legal consequences due to their political connections.
