Agartala, 28th August 2026: Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy has alleged that Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha provided contradictory information in the Tripura Legislative Assembly regarding the disposal of cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Roy said the Chief Minister had given different figures on the rate of charge-sheets and convictions in NDPS cases on two separate occasions in the Assembly.
Roy said that around six months ago, the Chief Minister had informed the House that the average rate of charge-sheets and convictions in NDPS cases during the financial years 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 stood at 3.06 per cent. According to Roy, the figures cited at that time included 2,779 charge-sheets and just 99 convictions.
However, referring to the Chief Minister’s statement in the Assembly on Friday, Roy claimed that the House was given different year-wise figures, with rates of 7 per cent for 2023-24, 5 per cent for 2024-25 and 11 per cent for 2025-26.
“I fail to understand which of the Chief Minister’s statements is true,” Roy said, questioning how the earlier average of 3.06 per cent could correspond with the latest figures of 7, 5 and 11 per cent.
The Congress MLA said the discrepancy required a clear explanation, as contradictory information placed before the Assembly could affect the credibility of legislative proceedings. He suggested that the Speaker could take suo motu cognisance of the matter and consider moving a privilege motion if deemed appropriate.
Roy also stressed that while strict action against the illegal drug trade must continue, investigations into allegations involving police personnel in drug-related activities should be conducted transparently and effectively.
He demanded that the government clarify the reasons behind the differences in the NDPS statistics presented by the Chief Minister and place accurate and consistent data before the Assembly.
