Agartala, 28th August 2026: Tripura is preparing an ambitious five-year strategy to boost livestock production, achieve self-sufficiency in milk, meat and eggs, and create new livelihood opportunities in rural areas, Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD) Minister Sudhangshu Das said in the Assembly on Friday.
Replying to questions on the department’s future roadmap, Das said the government was focusing on strengthening livestock farming as a key driver of the rural economy while creating employment opportunities for unemployed youth and empowering women.
He said Tripura has already made significant progress in the livestock sector. In terms of per-capita availability, the state is currently the second-largest milk-producing state in the Northeast, while it has achieved self-sufficiency in meat production and ranks second in the region in per-capita meat availability.
To further strengthen the dairy sector, the government is promoting artificial insemination, better nutrition for newborn calves, improved veterinary care and disease-control measures. The introduction of improved dairy breeds, livestock insurance and modernisation of milk-processing infrastructure are also part of the five-year plan.
The meat sector will receive further attention through artificial insemination programmes for pigs and distribution of pigs and goats under various government schemes. According to Das, insurance and other financial-security measures are being introduced for livestock farmers. A World Bank-supported project is also underway, while veterinary services are being expanded to reach farmers at their doorstep.
The government is also working on dedicated measures to increase the production of safe and hygienic meat.
In the poultry sector, Tripura has emerged as the leading state in the Northeast in per-capita egg availability, the minister said. To raise production further, improved breeds of poultry and ducks are being distributed, government farms are being upgraded and brooder houses are being constructed.
The government is also facilitating bank-linked financial assistance to encourage the establishment of large commercial poultry farms. Disease prevention and treatment systems are being strengthened to support the sector.
Das said the ultimate objective is not only to meet the state’s own demand for milk, meat and eggs but also to create the potential for exporting livestock and livestock products to other northeastern states and beyond.
The minister said the initiatives would contribute to food security, higher rural incomes, women’s empowerment and employment generation, making livestock farming an important component of Tripura’s economic development over the next five years.
