Agartala, 22nd April 2026: The political climate in Tripura has turned tense following recent events at Kalamchoura police station. At a press conference, Pradesh Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP, alleging serious misconduct and political interference in law enforcement.
Chakraborty claimed that governance in the state is deteriorating under the guise of “good administration,” with police officers facing mounting political pressure. He alleged that on April 18, when an accused attempted to meet the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalamchoura station in Boxanagar constituency, the request was denied. Soon after, the local BJP legislator allegedly abused and threatened the OC over the phone.
Congress questioned why, even five days later, neither senior police officials nor the Chief Minister had responded to the incident. The party insisted this was not an isolated case but part of a broader pattern of BJP influence over the police.
The opposition further accused the administration of taking punitive action against conscientious officers in the past, while now attempting to shield the accused legislator. Congress also raised concerns about illegal construction, drug trafficking, and other criminal activities allegedly flourishing under the ruling party’s watch.
“The democratic environment in the state is under threat. Ordinary citizens and even police personnel feel insecure,” Chakraborty said, demanding restoration of law and order and strict action against those responsible.
Congress also linked the unrest to the recent ADC elections, alleging that violence, ethnic divisions, and instability were deliberately stoked for political gain. The party vowed to continue its movement to safeguard democracy and the rule of law in Tripura.
