Agartala, 22nd April 2026: Acting on consumer complaints, officials from the Legal Metrology Department carried out a surprise inspection at Vasundhara Jewellers, where multiple irregularities were detected. During the raid, three weighing machines used in the store were seized.
Reportedly, several written complaints had been lodged alleging discrepancies in the weighing of gold and silver ornaments. In response, department officials conducted an unannounced inspection and found that the validity of three weighing machines had expired more than a year ago. Regulations mandate periodic verification and official stamping of such machines, but the jeweller had failed to comply. As a result, the machines were immediately confiscated.
An official stated, “We initiated the inspection after receiving consumer complaints. The irregularities were confirmed during the raid. The shop authorities have been instructed to get the machines re-verified without delay. Failure to comply within the stipulated time will invite legal action.”
The incident has raised concerns about consumer protection and regulatory compliance in the jewellery trade, with calls for stricter monitoring to ensure fair practices.
