Agartala, 8th September 2026 : The Tripura Electricity Consumers Association has stepped up its demand for withdrawal of the recently increased electricity tariff and a halt to the forced installation of smart meters in the state.
A delegation of the association on Tuesday visited the office of the Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission (TERC) and submitted a memorandum to a commission member, highlighting their demands.
Association representatives said that although the commission chairman was not present, they placed their demands before the member in charge. Their primary demand is that since the government has decided to provide 100 per cent subsidy against the increased electricity tariff, the additional tariff should no longer be reflected in consumers’ electricity bills.
They urged the government to pay the increased tariff amount directly to the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), so that consumers are not required to bear the additional charge through their monthly bills.
The association also demanded an immediate halt to the alleged forced installation of smart meters. It maintained that consumers should be given the freedom to choose between prepaid and postpaid meters according to their preference.
The organisation further opposed a TSECL notification making prepaid meters mandatory for new electricity connections.According to the association, the Electricity Regulatory Commission is a key authority in matters relating to electricity policy and regulation. Through the memorandum, the delegation submitted a total of seven demands to the commission member and chairperson.
The association urged the commission to intervene in the interest of consumers and ensure the withdrawal of the increased tariff, freedom of choice in meter systems and an end to the forced installation of smart meters.
