Agartala, 8th September 2026 : Several acres of agricultural land are reportedly being washed away due to severe riverbank erosion along the Dhalai River near Halhuli Dashami Ghat, adjacent to Kamalpur town, triggering concern among local residents and farmers.
Locals alleged that the Kamalpur Water Resources Department has already been informed about the erosion, but no significant action has been taken by the department so far. As a result, the erosion is reportedly intensifying with each passing day, raising fears of further loss of agricultural land along the riverbank.
According to residents, the problem began worsening around a month ago following continuous rainfall, which caused the water level of the Dhalai River to rise abnormally. Several low-lying areas of Halhuli were inundated during the period, while the strong current of the swollen river caused erosion at multiple locations.
Residents claimed that a considerable portion of agricultural land has already been lost to the river due to the ongoing erosion. They fear that if immediate preventive measures are not taken, more farmland could be swallowed by the river in the coming days.
Meanwhile, a modern Dashami Ghat was constructed at Halhuli with funds from the MLA Development Fund by Surma Assembly constituency MLA Swapna Das Paul to facilitate idol immersion. However, the ongoing erosion has now raised concerns over the safety of the ghat and its adjoining areas.
Local residents have urged the Water Resources Department to immediately undertake protective measures along the riverbank to safeguard the Dashami Ghat and nearby agricultural land. They have also appealed to the authorities to inspect the erosion-hit areas and initiate steps for a permanent solution to the problem.
