Agartala, 12th November 2025 : Kumarghat in Unakoti district witnessed striking scenes this afternoon as a pre-bid meeting for a major road construction project descended into chaos, exposing deep fissures in the state’s contractor ecosystem. What was meant to be a procedural gathering at the Public Works Department (PWD) office turned into a physical confrontation between rival contractor groups, prompting urgent police intervention.
The meeting was convened ahead of the tender submission for a road project valued at over Rs 40 crore. Contractors from across Tripura, including Unakoti, had assembled to discuss guidelines and project details. However, instead of deliberations on development, the session spiraled into a heated dispute.
Locals present over there stated that tensions flared when Madhab Chakraborty, a contractor from Pecharthal arrived at the venue. He was allegedly shoved out of the meeting by local contractor Prashanta Sarkar triggering a verbal altercation that quickly escalated into a scuffle. Panic gripped the office as staff scrambled for safety amid the commotion.
A large contingent of police personnel led by Kumarghat SDPO Utpalendu Debnath rushed to the scene and managed to restore order. While no serious injuries were reported, the incident has sparked widespread outrage among locals and raised serious questions about the integrity of public procurement processes.
Administrative sources condemned the incident, calling it “deeply regrettable” and symptomatic of a broader malaise. This is not an isolated case, clashes, threats and allegations of political interference have increasingly marred contractor dealings across the state.
As the dust settles in Kumarghat, a pressing question remains: Is Tripura’s development being driven by contractors or derailed by their turf wars?
