Agartala, 18th October 2025: The controversy surrounding the park constructed around the College Tilla water body under the Smart City project refuses to die down. Despite the park’s official inauguration, the issue has now reached the Human Rights Commission, prompting an administrative visit to the site on Saturday.
A team comprising members of the Human Rights Commission, the Land and Revenue Department, the Environment and Water Body Conservation Forum, and other administrative officials conducted a joint inspection of the park. The visit followed a formal complaint lodged by the Environment and Water Body Conservation Forum, which alleged that the project poses a serious threat to local ecology.
Speaking during the visit, the representatives of the Human Rights Commission noted that the College Tilla water body has long served as a natural habitat for migratory birds. However, they expressed concern that the area is gradually turning into a commercial hub following the park’s development — a transformation that could severely affect biodiversity.
“The matter is being examined very seriously. Conservation of natural habitats must be prioritized even in the name of urban development,” one of the visiting officials remarked.
The inspection team reportedly reviewed several aspects, including the environmental impact on the water body, bird movement patterns, and the sustainability of commercial activities within the park premises. Authorities are expected to submit their findings to the Commission soon.
