Controversy erupts over alleged misconduct and unauthorized access at GBP Hospital Morgue

Date:

Agartala, 7th April 2026:   Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital has come under fresh scrutiny following allegations of misconduct, unauthorized intervention, and administrative lapses surrounding an incident inside its morgue on April 3.

According to sources familiar with the matter, a dispute took place inside the morgue around noon involving three advocates Kaushik Karmakar, Rupak Nama and Jibon Krishna Debnath and an individual identified as Biswajit Debnath, who is alleged to operate as an intermediary in motor accident compensation-related cases.

Sources claimed that the three advocates had entered the morgue after obtaining prior permission from Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Kanak Roychowdhury on March 6 and were responding to a request from a potential client Abhijit Das related to legal procedures following a road accident death.

While the advocates were reportedly collecting details from the family concerned, Biswajit Debnath allegedly entered the morgue and objected to their presence, leading to a verbal altercation. Sources alleged that abusive language was used during the confrontation, although the lawyers chose to leave the premises without escalating the matter further.

The incident has also drawn attention to the role of hospital administration, with allegations that Medical Superintendent Dr Bidhan Goswami later issued a version of events that, according to sources, did not fully reflect the sequence of incidents inside the morgue. Critics have alleged that the statement was made without a detailed internal inquiry.

Questions have also been raised regarding access control inside the hospital morgue, which is considered a legally sensitive area, particularly in cases involving accidental deaths and compensation claims. Sources within the hospital said only duly authorized individuals, including advocates with official permission and immediate family members, should be allowed entry.

The matter has further highlighted concerns over alleged middlemen operating around medico-legal cases in hospital premises. Sources alleged that some individuals present themselves as media persons while engaging in activities related to legal case referrals and compensation claims.

No official statement has yet been issued by hospital authorities regarding any formal inquiry into the incident. However, sources indicated that demands are growing for stricter regulation of entry into sensitive hospital zones and greater administrative vigilance.
