Court awards husband, in-laws to ten years imprisonment for killing housewife

Agartala: August 28. The Additional District and Session court of West District on Monday has sentenced three persons and awarded them with ten years rigorous imprisonment for killing a house wife.

Public Prosecutor Arindam Deb said that the court announced the sentence of ten years rigorous imprisonment to the three accused who were found guilty in the murder of Jhuma Debnath in Koroimura area under Ranirbazar police station.

The convicted accused are the deceased’s husband Ratan Debnath, father-in-law Manindra Debnath and mother-in-law Manda Debnath.

“According to the details, Jhuma Debnath was subjected to physical and mental torture by her husband and mother-in-law for dowry after marriage. Forced to do so, Jhuma Debnath committed suicide by hanging herself at her husband’s house in the late night of March 25, 2014. A day before this incident, Jhuma Debnath was beaten up by her husband and in-laws. After the incident, the family members of the deceased’s father filed a case against the deceased’s husband Ratan Debnath, father-in-law Manindra Debnath and mother-in-law Manda Debnath at Ranirbazar police station”, said the advocate.

The investigating officer of the case completed the investigation and submitted the charge sheet to the court.

“Then the trial begins. After trial in the Additional District and Sessions Court of West District, the court convicted the three accused. The judge sentenced the accused on Monday. Today, the judge sentenced the three accused to 10 years rigorous imprisonment under IPC Section 304B. Besides IPC section 498A announced 3 years rigorous imprisonment and two months rigorous imprisonment in default of payment of Rs 5000 fine”, he said.
