Agartala, 5th February 2025:   Thirteen years after a horrific dowry-related murder, the Kamalpur Additional Sessions Judge Court in Dhalai District has sentenced a man to 11 years of rigorous imprisonment and his mother to one year for the brutal killing of a housewife.

Public Prosecutor on Wednesday revealed that the incident took place on September 25, 2012, at around 9 AM in Salema, Dhalai District. The victim, Jomeli Debbarma, was subjected to severe physical torture by her husband and in-laws over dowry demands. Later, they poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.

Jomeli was rushed to Kulai Hospital and later referred to Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) for further treatment. However, she succumbed to her injuries the same night. Following the incident, her father lodged a written complaint at Salema Police Station, leading to the registration of a case. After an investigation, then Kamalpur Sub-divisional Police Officer Bikas Deb submitted a charge sheet against her husband Jitendra Debbarma, father-in-law Mangal Debbarma, and mother-in-law Sukumoti Debbarma.

During the trial, Mangal Debbarma passed away. The court recorded statements from 35 witnesses, and on Tuesday, Additional Sessions Judge Sammobikas Das found the husband and mother-in-law guilty.

On Wednesday, the court pronounced the sentence to Jitendra Debbarma (husband) – 11 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 and Sukumoti Debbarma (mother-in-law) – 1 year of rigorous imprisonment.
