Agartala, April 04: In a recent development that has sparked widespread controversy, opposition parties have been accused of inciting uproar not in the interest of democracy, but for their own political gains. The state has witnessed a surge of activity from Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPIM], with both parties actively campaigning under the banner of defending democratic values.

However, BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya today challenged these assertions, claiming that the true motive behind the opposition’s actions is self-preservation. During a press conference held at the BJP office here, Bhattacharya criticized the opposition, stating that their past conflicts and current alliance suggest a strategy aimed at protecting vested interests rather than upholding democratic principles.

The BJP spokesperson also addressed historical grievances, questioning the opposition’s narrative regarding incidents that occurred during the Left’s tenure. He specifically referenced the case of Sridam Pal in Birchandra Manu, Shantirbazar sub-division, who was declared a victim of public outrage during Sameer Ranjan Burman’s term as law minister. Despite a judicial inquiry into the matter, Bhattacharya expressed skepticism over the opposition’s portrayal of past events as isolated incidents.

Bhattacharya further questioned the opposition’s stance on political violence, asserting that the BJP government has not perpetrated political terrorism. He contrasted this with the Jiraniya massacre that followed the establishment of the third Left Front government, insinuating possible Congress involvement. The BJP spokesperson demanded clarity on the CPIM’s current alliances and their implications for past conflicts.

The press conference also saw BJP state committee member Nabadal Banik in attendance, supporting Bhattacharya’s claims. The BJP’s narrative suggests that the opposition’s newfound unity is a facade, aimed not at safeguarding democracy but at securing their political future and personal ambitions. The BJP has called for transparency and accountability, urging the opposition to address the discrepancies between their actions and their proclaimed democratic intentions.
