Agartala, 11th March 2026: Ahead of the upcoming by-election to the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency, Left Front-nominated CPI(M) candidate Amitabha Dutta has started his campaign by reaching out to voters through door-to-door visits.
On Tuesday, Dutta began his campaign along with party leaders and workers, interacting with residents and seeking their support across different localities of the constituency.
The Dharmanagar Assembly seat fell vacant following the demise of Tripura Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen. Although the Election Commission of India has not yet announced the schedule for the by-poll, the Left Front created a stir in political circles by declaring its candidate in advance.
The CPI(M) has nominated Amitabha Dutta, a former MLA, member of the party’s state secretariat, and the North District Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Speaking during the campaign, Dutta alleged that an atmosphere of violence has prevailed in the state since 2018. He claimed that people are preparing to protest against the situation and urged voters across booths in the constituency to support the Left Front candidate to bring about change.
He also said the by-election is an opportunity to address issues such as violence against women and the growing frustration among unemployed youth. Dutta appealed to voters to elect the Left Front candidate with a large margin to create a new sense of hope in the state.
It is noteworthy that during the 2023 Tripura Legislative Assembly election, the Indian National Congress contested from the Dharmanagar seat with support from the CPI(M). However, the CPI(M) has now decided to field its own candidate in the by-poll, moving away from that alliance arrangement.
Meanwhile, Tripura Pradesh Congress President Asish Kumar Saha had earlier stated that the Congress would also field its candidate in the by-election. This has sparked discussions in political circles about the possible electoral contest in the constituency.
Political observers believe the election results will reveal how much impact the CPI(M) campaign can have on voters in the Dharmanagar by-poll.
