CPI(M) Candidates Prevented from Filing Nomination Papers in Kamalpur; Bloodshed Reported

Date:

Agartala, 31st October 2026 :  Questions have been raised over the law and order situation in Tripura following allegations that CPI(M) candidates were prevented from filing their nomination papers on the first day of the nomination process. Violence erupted in Kamalpur on Friday, leaving five CPI(M) workers injured, barely 24 hours after the announcement of the election schedule.

According to allegations levelled by the CPI(M), BJP-backed miscreants obstructed the party’s candidates and supporters from filing their nomination papers. The CPI(M) candidates, along with party leaders and supporters, had set out in a procession from the party office to submit their nominations.

However, upon reaching the area near the bus terminal, a group of people allegedly carrying BJP flags and sticks approached them from the opposite direction and attempted to attack them. CRPF personnel intervened and prevented the alleged attackers from advancing. As a result, the CPI(M) candidates could not proceed to file their nomination papers.

Later, while returning from the spot along the banks of the Dhalai River, several CPI(M) workers were allegedly attacked by BJP-backed miscreants. Those injured included CITU Sub-Divisional Committee Secretary Debashish Das and party workers Sushil Debbarma, Dilip Das and Bhushan Das. They were subsequently rescued and taken to Kamalpur Sub-Divisional Hospital for treatment.

Addressing a press conference at the party office, CPI(M) Dhalai District Committee Secretary Anjan Das said that the condition of Debashish Das, Dilip Das and Sushil Das was serious. They were subsequently referred to Kulai District Hospital for advanced medical treatment.

Anjan Das further stated that the CPI(M) had fielded 11 candidates in Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat. He alleged that since the announcement of the election schedule on Friday, the ruling party had created an atmosphere of fear across Kamalpur town through groups of motorcycle-borne supporters.

He claimed that the ruling BJP was apprehensive of defeat if free and fair elections were held and was therefore attempting to suppress democracy and undermine the people’s mandate. The CPI(M) Kamalpur Sub-Divisional Committee strongly condemned the incident.

Anjan Das also alleged that since 2018, the ruling party had turned every election into a farce, claiming that elections were not allowed to be conducted properly in 2021.

The CPI(M) leadership has accused the ruling party of resorting to violence and intimidation to prevent opposition candidates from participating in the democratic electoral process.
