Agartala, 31st October 2026 : The Tripura government has intensified efforts to transform healthcare delivery through digital technology, aiming to ensure paperless operations across all government hospitals under the Integrated Health Management Information System (IHMIS).
Health Secretary Kiran Gitte reviewed the progress of the initiative at a meeting held at GBP Hospital on Saturday, where he stressed the need for doctors, nurses, paramedical personnel and laboratory technicians to make full use of the digital platform.
Speaking to reporters, Gitte said all hospitals in the state had already been brought under the IHMIS network, marking an important step towards modernising the healthcare infrastructure.
“Our objective is to make the entire hospital system digital and paperless. We have already onboarded 100 per cent of hospitals in Tripura under IHMIS. Now, the focus is on ensuring that healthcare professionals actively use the platform and that the maximum number of patients’ health records are linked to it,” he said.
Highlighting the functioning of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civil Hospital in Agartala, Gitte said the institution had been operating digitally since its establishment. The system covers the entire patient journey, beginning with OPD registration and token generation, followed by admission, medical prescriptions, pharmacy services and laboratory investigations. Patients can also access their test reports through their mobile phones.
According to the Health Secretary, digitalisation will enable doctors to retrieve patients’ medical histories through tablets, allowing them to examine previous records and issue prescriptions or diagnostic instructions without depending on physical files.
He said the system would be particularly beneficial for patients referred between hospitals. A patient transferred from Gomati district to AGMC or GBP Hospital, for instance, would not have to carry previous medical documents. Doctors could retrieve details of earlier investigations, medicines, X-rays and CT scans through the patient’s ABHA number.
Comparing the initiative with the growing use of digital transactions in banking, railways and aviation, Gitte said similar improvements in efficiency, transparency and speed were expected in the healthcare sector.
He appealed to people across the state to obtain their Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) numbers and use them whenever they visit hospitals. He stressed that registration, token issuance, admission, discharge and medical investigations should increasingly be linked to the unique health identification number.
The Health Secretary said Saturday’s meeting was convened to strengthen the implementation of IHMIS at the ground level and ensure that both healthcare providers and patients actively participate in the digital transition.
He added that the broader objective of the initiative was to improve healthcare delivery and provide quality medical services to the people of Tripura through a more efficient and integrated system.
