CPIM CC GS Mariam Alexander Baby criticizes BJP’s governance, alleges reign of terror in Tripura

Agartala, 11th May 2025: CPIM has strongly criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party [BJP]-led government in Tripura, alleging that the ruling party has distanced itself from the people and is relying on authoritarian tactics to maintain control. CPIM Central Committee General Secretary Mariam Alexander Baby and Politburo member Jitendra Chowdhury made these remarks at a press conference held at the CPIM state office on Sunday.

Addressing the media personnel here in CPIM state headquarter this evening, Baby asserted that the government’s isolation from the people has rendered it unable to face the electorate. To compensate for this disconnect, the BJP is reportedly attempting to instill fear across the state. “The ruling party is resorting to intimidation and oppression, rather than addressing people’s grievances,” Baby claimed.

In a broader discussion about international affairs, Baby addressed the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, questioning the role of foreign mediation. He expressed concerns over former U.S. President Donald Trump’s unexpected statement, which suggested that India and Pakistan had agreed to a ceasefire under his intervention.

“Why should there be a third-party mediator when India and Pakistan can engage in direct talks? The Foreign Secretary of India has clarified that the Director General of Military Operations of Pakistan requested a ceasefire, which is an acceptable diplomatic approach. However, the government must explain why a foreign nation is inserting itself into this process,” Baby demanded.

Opposition leader and a senior CPIM Politburo member Jitendra Chowdhury spoke extensively about the growing dissatisfaction among the public. He accused the BJP of undermining democratic principles and suppressing dissent.

“The country is witnessing an alarming level of political suppression, resembling authoritarian rule,” Chowdhury stated. He highlighted that protesters across Tripura are taking to the streets on issues ranging from failing infrastructure to unpaid wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act [MGNREGA].

“In several regions, including Rajnagar, Dharmanagar, Udaipur, Mohanpur Manda, and Dukli sub-divisions, party offices have been vandalized, and CPIM workers and supporters have been assaulted,” Chowdhury alleged. He further criticized the BJP’s approach of “Khela Mela,” a campaign he claimed was a diversionary tactic to mask governance failures.

Chowdhury emphasized that CPIM will continue to stand against what he described as “undemocratic and oppressive practices” of the ruling party. He also condemned alleged efforts to create panic among minority communities in Tripura.

Meanwhile, CPIM West Tripura District Committee Secretary Ratan Das and Krishna Rakshit have been appointed to key positions within the state secretariat. Haribal Debnath and Longtharai Valley Secretary Himangshu have been designated as invitee members, while senior CPIM leader Manik Dey also participated in the press conference.
