CPIM demands judicial probe into Monisha Das death case

Date:

Agartala, 14th  June 2026:    CPI(M) in Tripura has demanded a high-level judicial or senior police-led investigation into the death of Monisha Das, a staff member of a private medical college hospital, alleging that the circumstances surrounding the incident are suspicious and that the truth is being suppressed.

Addressing a press conference at the state CPI(M) office on Sunday, Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury said that the death of Monisha, who worked at a medical college hostel under the Tripura Shantiniketan Medical College Hospital, was “not a normal case” and warranted an impartial investigation under a sitting judge or a senior police officer.

Chaudhury claimed that after speaking with the deceased’s family, it was learned that Monisha had been working at the girls’ hostel for nearly two years following her studies. He alleged that she was subjected to excessive workload and pressure, with threats of termination if she failed to meet work expectations. According to him, the workload was so heavy that she could not even attend her brother’s birthday celebration.

He further alleged discrepancies in the circumstances of the death, claiming that when the family reached the institution, they were informed that Monisha was unwell, after which they were taken to the college where her body was found hanging. He also questioned the police version of events, stating that certain physical details at the scene, including the position of a chair and signs of disturbance in the room, raised doubts. He added that a post-mortem report had not yet been made public, while a senior police officer had already suggested suicide.

The CPI(M) leader also questioned why the college authorities had not yet been properly interrogated and raised concerns over social media videos circulating in connection with the case.

Chaudhury said the party demands an investigation led by a senior police official or a sitting judge to ensure transparency and justice for the family, and urged the state government to provide support to the bereaved family.

During the press conference, he also referred to other incidents in the state involving alleged violence in educational institutions and made strong political remarks against the ruling party, claiming a breakdown of law and order. He was accompanied by CPI(M) leader Navarun Deb and others.
