Protest Erupts in Salema Block Over Damaged Road and Bridge

Date:

Agartala, 14th  June 2026:     Public anger over years of neglect erupted in the Salema Block under Kamalpur subdivision, where more than 300 families staged a road blockade demanding urgent repair of a damaged bridge and road affected by floods.

According to local residents of the Mechuria Panchayat area, the embankment near a bridge has been continuously eroding for the past several years, severely damaging the main connecting road as well as nearby agricultural fields. Despite repeated complaints to the concerned departments and local representatives, no effective action has been taken, the villagers alleged.

Frustrated by the lack of response, residents came out onto the streets and blocked the road, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill and creating tension in the area. The protesters stated that they would continue the blockade until the Block Development Officer (BDO) arrives at the site.

The villagers are demanding immediate protective measures to stop the erosion of the stream bank and urgent restoration of the damaged road. They have also warned of launching a larger agitation if authorities fail to act promptly.
