Agartala, 10th September 2024: The CPIM West Tripura District Committee on Tuesday submitted a mass deputation to the District Magistrate, pressing for various demands including compensation for flood victims, reconstruction of work-food-houses, and compensation for land and cattle to farmers. The procession saw the participation of prominent leaders such as former Chief Minister and Politburo member Manik Sarkar, former Minister Manik Dey, and former MP Shankar Prasad Dutta.
The delegation commenced their march from Orient Chowmuhani in Agartala, culminating at the Office Lane area where a protest program was organized. Addressing the gathering, former Minister Manik Dey criticized the state government for its handling of the recent floods that devastated the state from August 19-23.
“The government was aware of the impending floods but failed to inform the public adequately,” Dey stated. “No warnings were issued, resulting in the tragic loss of 33 lives. Had the government evacuated people from vulnerable areas along the riverbanks, many lives and properties could have been saved.”
Dey further accused the government of neglecting the needs of the flood-affected people. “People are left without work and food. In Udaipur, floodwaters still persist in many areas, yet the government is forcing people out of relief camps. This is unacceptable. The government must support the people in their time of need,” he asserted.
The CPIM also demanded the allocation of REGA work for the next two months and an increase in wages to provide sustenance for the flood victims. Dey expressed concern over reports of ruling party officials allegedly misappropriating relief supplies. “It is alarming that some officials are looting food meant for flood victims. Moreover, those not affiliated with the ruling party are not receiving adequate aid,” he alleged.
Dey concluded by urging the government to expedite financial support to the affected people. “Fifteen days have passed since the flood, yet the promised financial assistance from the Double Engine government has not reached the people. This delay is causing widespread despair. The government must address these issues immediately,” he demanded.
The protest highlighted the urgent need for effective disaster management and timely relief measures to mitigate the suffering of the flood-affected populace.
The police from Bankul outpost have now launched an investigation into the incident.
