Agartala, 28th June 2026: A protest march and street meeting were organised by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) in Manubankul on Sunday morning, opposing the recent increase in electricity tariffs and additional charges. The demonstration was also held in the New Bazaar area, where party workers and supporters gathered in large numbers.
At the street meeting, the chief speaker was former MLA of the 39 Manu Assembly constituency, Prabhat Choudhury. Addressing the gathering, he alleged that the financial burden of ₹152 crore, reportedly linked to the fleeing FIDCO company, is being passed on to electricity consumers in Tripura.
He further claimed that Tripura has sufficient natural gas reserves underground and questioned the need for importing fuel from outside the state, especially when electricity tariffs and related charges continue to rise. He demanded the immediate withdrawal of the increased electricity rates, warning that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) would intensify mass movements in the future if the demands are not met.
The programme witnessed participation from a large number of party leaders, workers, and supporters, marking a significant local mobilisation against the tariff hike.
