Agartala, 26th March 2026: Residents of Bishalgarh are living in fear as reports emerge of illegal arms stockpiles under the BJP–IPFT–Tipra Motha alliance’s tenure. Locals allege that armed groups roam openly, brandishing weapons and spreading terror, while law and order has collapsed.
The CPI(M) Sub-Divisional Committee today staged a protest by hanging an open memorandum outside the SDPO’s office, demanding immediate action against the growing menace.
Since the change of government in 2018, the opposition claims the ruling party has unleashed semi-fascist terror across Bishalgarh subdivision. Two CPI(M) workers have been killed, over 500 leaders and supporters assaulted, homes and businesses destroyed, and party offices repeatedly attacked or shut down. The subdivision office itself has been set ablaze, with at least 12 attacks reported. Despite repeated complaints, police have allegedly failed to investigate or take action.
Factional clashes within the ruling party over illegal earnings have become routine. Earlier this month, a gang war erupted between rival groups over a looted consignment of Phensedyl cough syrup, stretching from Bishalgarh to Charilam. In another incident, BJP youth leaders attacked a district leader’s house over municipal work disputes, firing shots and vandalizing property.
On March 20, BJP contractor and district committee member Anup Saha’s house in Netajinagar was fired upon twice. Similarly, contractor Chandan Debnath’s residence near Officetilla Balak Baba Ashram was attacked with gunfire for three consecutive days. Eyewitnesses say ruling party-backed miscreants openly carry pistols in broad daylight.
The CPI(M) alleges that BJP worker Ranbir Debnath, accused in several incidents, regularly posts threatening video clips on social media, demanding money from locals and issuing death threats. Police, they claim, remain inactive due to political pressure from influential leaders.
Meanwhile, residents themselves have handed over armed BJP workers to the police. On the night of March 23 last, locals caught party worker Karnajit Das with a pistol in Champamura. The next day, GRP police arrested Subrata Dutta, president of the BMS Madhupur Syndicate, at Agartala railway station with a firearm.
Fear grips Bishalgarh as markets shut down before dusk and residents avoid stepping out of their homes. CPI(M) leaders say they have submitted multiple deputations to the SDPO and local police, but no effective measures have been taken.
In today’s memorandum, the party wrote: “Bishalgarh residents are terrified and insecure. Police have become puppets, administration is absent. Illegal arms stockpiles, looting, political terror, gang wars, drug trade, theft, daylight robberies, and murders have become daily occurrences. Yet police remain indifferent and ineffective. Bishalgarh people want peace. Restore democracy and protect lives and property.”
