Agartala, 18th August 2025:   The CPIM staged a one-hour blockade on a national highway in Tripura this morning, protesting prolonged delays and alleged negligence in the construction of alternative national highways NH-208 and NH-208A.

The demonstration took place from 9 AM to 10 AM near the Jherjeri Puli checkpoint in Kadamtala block, was led by CPIM Sub-Divisional Secretary Abhijit Dey. Several prominent leaders joined the protest, including Islam Uddin (MLA, 54-Kurti Kadamtala), Shailendra Chandra Nath (MLA, 57-Yubarajnagar), and former minister Bijita Nath.

Speaking to reporters, Dey criticized the state of highway development, stating, “Construction of NH-208 and NH-208A began in 2016, yet even after 7–8 years, the work remains incomplete. Despite an allocation of Rs 2,448 crore for 153 km of NH-208 and over Rs 85 crore for 70 km of NH-208A, the quality of work is abysmal. In many stretches, vehicular movement is nearly impossible.”

He further alleged that contractors have received the majority of the funds, but road conditions have not improved. Currently, around 21 km of NH-208 is reportedly non-functional, while traffic on NH-208A is virtually halted.

Protesters demanded immediate repair and completion of the remaining work on both highways. CPIM leaders warned that if the government fails to act swiftly, the party will escalate its agitation in the coming days.
