Agartala, 18th August 2025:   A nine-year-old girl Asmi Majumdar from Charkabai Madhyapara tragically passed away on Sunday night allegedly due to medical negligence at Baikhora Primary Health Centre.

According to the family, Asmi was brought to the health centre around 10 p.m. after suffering what appeared to be a venomous bite on her leg. Dr. Randip Bhowmik, the attending physician at the emergency unit, reportedly prescribed a WBCT blood test. However, the facility lacked the necessary equipment to conduct the test. Instead of admitting the child, Dr. Bhowmik administered three injections and sent her home without referring her to a higher medical facility.

Later that night, Asmi’s condition worsened, her skin reportedly began to discolor prompting her family to rush her back to Baikhora. Only then was she referred to Santirbazar District Hospital, where blood tests confirmed the presence of venom in her bloodstream. She was subsequently referred to GBP Hospital, but succumbed to her condition shortly after arrival.

The incident has reignited concerns over the deteriorating state of Baikhora Primary Health Centre. Locals allege that since the departure of former physician Subhrajyoti Majumdar, the hospital has fallen into disrepair. Under Dr. Bhowmik’s current tenure, the facility is reportedly unhygienic, with nurses accused of mistreating patients. Despite Chief Medical Officer Jyotirmoy Das being officially stationed at Bilonia headquarters, he is said to reside in the Baikhora hospital quarters, raising questions about oversight.

Asmi’s death has cast a pall of grief over Charkabai, with residents demanding accountability and immediate action against the physician involved. Community members have staged protests, calling for systemic reforms and improved healthcare standards in the region.
