Crores wasted: Boundary wall of Udaipur Railway Station collapses amid construction

Agartala, 6th June 2025:   The ongoing construction at Udaipur Railway Station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme suffered a major setback on Saturday, as a significant portion of the newly built boundary wall unexpectedly collapsed. The incident has sparked concerns among residents regarding the quality of construction and the alleged mismanagement of funds allocated for the project.

Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2023, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme aims to modernize 508 railway stations across India, with a budget of approximately Rs 24,700 crore. As part of this initiative, Rs 96.7 crore was allocated for railway stations in Tripura, including Dharmanagar, Kumarghat and Udaipur. Of this, Udaipur Railway Station received Rs 34 crore for infrastructural upgrades, including the construction of a boundary wall and overbridges.

However, hopes for a state-of-the-art railway facility have been dampened by concerns over poor construction quality. Local residents, who had once celebrated the Amrit Bharat Station Mahotsav with optimism, expressed frustration over what they perceive as negligence by contractors and railway officials.

Contractor Hiranmoy Das and project manager Ganesh Mitra attributed the collapse to flood-related damage, a claim met with skepticism by locals who argue that no significant flooding occurred in the area. “Even last year’s floods did not wash away buildings, so how did this happen?” questioned one resident.

The incident has fueled allegations of corruption and financial misappropriation, with many pointing fingers at officials for overlooking the use of substandard materials. Experts warn that the issue reflects deeper concerns about accountability in infrastructure projects, raising pressing questions about oversight and transparency in public expenditure.

As discussions intensify, residents demand an official inquiry to investigate the quality of construction and ensure that funds meant for railway development are utilized effectively.
