Crumbled road conditions cause daily commuter despair at Kumarghat

Agartala, 3rd January 2025:   The deplorable condition of the road due to gross negligence and irresponsibility by the authorities has forced people to endure daily commutes filled with hardship and distress. The road, riddled with potholes, has become so dangerous that accidents occur frequently. The authorities seem to be in a state of deep slumber. The road’s pitiful state right under the nose of the Kumarghat Public Works Department (PWD) office, which is a stone’s throw away, has left local representatives and the public enraged.

This isn’t a remote hamlet; this decrepit road stretches from the Kumarghat PWD office to the Deo-Manu River junction at Halaimura. It is riddled with numerous potholes, turning it into a death trap. Last monsoon, these potholes enlarged due to rainwater. Whenever it rains, the water stagnates in the potholes, and vehicles, splashing the dirty water on pedestrians as they pass. Every day, many people travel along this road, yet there is no initiative to repair it. The road’s dire state forces people into suffering and misery.

Adding to the woes, unscientific filling of land on both sides of the road for building houses has led to waterlogging on the road. Even in winter, the absence of a proper drainage system causes water to stagnate. Allegations indicate that haphazard landfilling for house construction has led to rainwater accumulation on the road. Once, Halaimura was known for its agricultural land. The land has now been filled in for constructing houses, blocking the paths for water flow, and causing waterlogging on the road.

Currently, this road holds significant importance. A social organization named Heritage Organization has undertaken an initiative to convert the Deo-Manu River junction at Halaimura into a heritage pilgrimage site. Sudarshan Baidya, the head of the organization, mentioned, “We are in the process of installing a statue of Ganga Mata at the river junction. Plans are underway to develop the junction into an attractive tourism center. From March 27, festivals and fairs will begin, and a large crowd is expected. However, the dilapidated condition of the road will cause severe problems.”

In response to this situation, the Heritage Organization has decided to take action by providing a deputation and organizing a movement.
