Agartala, 27th January 2026: The 77th Republic Day cultural program, organized at Rajarshi Hall under the joint initiative of the Gomati District Administration and the Department of Information and Culture, failed to live up to expectations despite significant government funding.
Although the state government allocated a substantial budget for the event, the final picture was far from encouraging. From the very beginning, the hall remained largely empty. In a city often described as the “Cultural Lake City,” the absence of local residents was striking. Neither the usual crowd of spectators nor the familiar festive enthusiasm was visible. A handful of attendees did turn up, but they left quickly after the program concluded, showing little excitement or emotional engagement.
The lackluster turnout has raised questions. Traditionally, this stage witnesses spontaneous participation from cultural figures, students, and ordinary citizens. Why then was this year so different? Observers point to inadequate publicity, poor planning, or a perfunctory approach as possible reasons. The result has left many residents deeply disappointed and frustrated.
The event was intended to showcase the spirit of Republic Day through cultural expression. Yet, without public presence, the purpose itself seemed defeated. Who bears responsibility for this failure, the district administration, the Information and Cultural Affairs department or both?
Citizens are now asking a pressing question: if government funds are spent on events that fail to reach the people, what is the true value of such arrangements? For a city like Udaipur, known for its cultural vibrancy, the empty hall was not only disheartening but also a matter of shame and reflection.
