Agartala, 16th April 2025:   The sole road leading to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital has become a perilous pathway for daily commuters due to its deteriorating state. Waterlogging, absence of drainage systems and hidden potholes beneath rainwater have transformed the stretch into a site of frequent accidents.

This morning, tragedy struck when a tom-tom turtle on this waterlogged road, injuring four individuals. Among the injured persons was a patient returning from treatment and two elderly citizens who struggled with mobility due to age. Eyewitnesses acted swiftly, rescuing them from beneath the overturned vehicle.

“The accident was caused by an invisible pothole concealed under the rainwater. The administration has been informed about the road’s condition for a long time, but no concrete steps have been taken,” a local resident said.

Further compounding the issue is the unfinished boundary wall of the hospital, which collapsed during last year’s monsoon. While reconstruction began, the work was abruptly halted, blocking nearby drains and exacerbating waterlogging. Minor rains are now sufficient to bring traffic to a standstill, significantly hindering access to emergency services.

Tom-tom drivers, who frequently transport patients to and from the hospital, are growing increasingly alarmed. “We risk our lives every day on this road. The potholes and waterlogged conditions make it impossible to maintain control, leading to repeated accidents,” one driver lamented.

Local residents have voiced their frustration, calling the situation a violation of basic human rights. “Leaving a hospital’s main road in this state is not just negligence; it’s sheer inhumanity,” one community member expressed.
