Agartala, 13th February 2026: A massive fire destroyed the home of a daily wage labourer’s family in Gournagar, opposite the block office, leaving them destitute. The blaze reduced the entire house to ashes within minutes, sparking panic in the locality and anger over the fire service’s response.
Locals informed that the fire first broke out in the kitchen, though family members believe it was triggered by an electrical short circuit. The flames spread rapidly, engulfing the entire dwelling. Residents alerted the fire service, but locals allege there was a delay in arrival. In the meantime, neighbours attempted to douse the fire themselves. When a fire engine finally reached the spot, it reportedly lacked sufficient water, leading to outrage among residents. Tensions escalated, with some attempting to vandalize the vehicle and attack personnel, though community members intervened to calm the situation. Firefighters later managed to control the blaze using water from a nearby pond, but by then the house was completely destroyed. A second fire engine arrived later to assist.
Kailashahar OC Tapas Malakar and SI Debabrata Shil deployed a large team to restore order.
The family, headed by labourer Dayal Bauri, lost all belongings, including furniture, daily essentials, and important documents. Unable to salvage anything, they now remain homeless and in tears under the open sky.
Local residents have demanded immediate financial aid and rehabilitation from the administration, stressing that without government support, it will be nearly impossible for the family to rebuild their lives.
