Agartala, 8th February 2025: Charilam assembly constituency MLA Subodh Debbarma along with Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council MDC Uma Shankar Debbarma ordered Bishramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Subimal Debnath to promptly identify and arrest the killer vehicle and its driver responsible for the tragic death of 70-year-old farmer Jiban Lal Debbarma. The officials stressed that the vehicle must be seized and the driver brought to justice immediately to avoid further issues.
On February 5 last, Jiban Lal Debbarma was struck by a speeding car while crossing National Highway No. 8 in front of the Bishramganj Sepahijala Police Superintendent’s Office. He was searching for his cattle when the accident occurred. The injured farmer was rushed to Bishramganj Primary Health Center and subsequently referred to Agartala GBP Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that night. His body was brought home the following day, and last rites were performed according to religious customs.
Jiban Lal Debbarma, a poor farmer, leaves behind his wife Sumitra Debbarma, two sons, and three daughters. Despite 72 hours passing since the incident, the police have yet to identify the killer vehicle. On Saturday morning, MLA Subodh Debbarma visited the deceased farmer’s home in Ramdas Para of Bansh Toli Village, near Bishramganj ITI College, to offer condolences and support to the grieving family.
Standing in front of the Sachin Dev Barman Memorial Field on the national highway, the MLA confronted OC Subimal Debnath, demanding swift action. “Have you visited Jiban Lal Debbarma’s house?” the MLA inquired. To his surprise, the OC admitted he had not, despite the proximity of the house to the police station.
Expressing his dismay, the MLA recalled a similar incident from last December when three youths from the same village died in a bike accident during the Tiring festival. “Three months have passed, and you still haven’t identified the killer vehicle. What are you doing?” he asked the OC. In response, the OC explained that CCTV footage from nearby locations had been sent to the lab but the number plate of the vehicle remained unclear due to low-resolution cameras.
The OC suggested that installing higher-resolution CCTV cameras on the national highway could aid in future investigations. However, his suggestion was seen as an attempt to divert attention from the immediate issue. The MLA and MDC reiterated their order for the OC to identify the killer vehicle and take prompt legal action.
The family of the deceased farmer expressed their gratitude for the MLA’s support during this difficult time.
