Debate on census basis for women’s quota set for April 16: Kalyani

Agartala, 14th April 2026:   Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called a special session of Parliament on April 16, which will continue until April 17. The announcement was made by Kalyani Roy, Chief Whip of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, during a press conference at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s state office on Tuesday.

The session is expected to focus on the implementation of the Nari Shakti Bandhan Adhiniyam, a landmark bill passed in September 2025. The legislation, which secured approval in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha before receiving presidential assent, mandates 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

The key issue now under discussion is whether the reservation will be enforced based on the 2011 Census or on future census data. This matter will be debated in the upcoming special session. Several party leaders were also present at the press conference alongside Roy.
