Tribal couple left out of housing scheme despite eligibility

Date:

Agartala, 14th April 2026:  A stark example of uneven development has emerged from Sutar Mura village in Charilam block, where a poor tribal couple continues to live in dire conditions despite being entitled to government housing support.

Residents Narayan Debbarma and Chikon Mala Debbarma, holders of an Antyodaya ration card, have yet to receive a sanctioned government house. For years, they have been forced to reside in a dilapidated mud dwelling, vulnerable to natural disasters. During monsoon season, water seeps through the roof and floods the interior, leaving them exposed to unsafe living conditions.

Local sources say repeated appeals to the administration have gone unanswered, raising questions about why genuine beneficiaries are excluded from welfare schemes.

Villagers have demanded urgent intervention, calling for a permanent house to be allotted to the couple. They argue that the true purpose of development should be to ensure government benefits reach society’s most marginalized groups — a goal that remains elusive in many areas.
