Agartala, November 21, 2022: An extreme frustration and tension has been noticed among the depositors of Ragna Post Office in Dharmanagar sub-division over embezzlement of their money by the postmaster of the branch office.
The allegation has been raised against the official of Ragna Post Office under Ragna Gram Panchayat in Dharmanagar sub-division. The depositors complained that the postmaster Ajit Kumar Sinha and his son Amiya Sinha conspired to embezzle their money. Many of the depositors complained about Savings, RD and PLI in this post office. Later the matter came to the attention of the depositors and the incident started in 2020. While getting the maturity, it is seen that there is no correlation between the depositors’ maturity and the accumulated amount. Then all the depositors’ in the area went to check their accounts and saw that he had taken the money of about 40-45 depositors from them but did not deposit it in the account and he kept the account book of many of them with himself. With the books of some, he says that he is making interest on their accumulated money. However, when the matter finally came to everyone’s attention, the higher authorities were informed.
On the advice of the authorities, the locals go to a compromise settlement. The matter was settled when the postmaster promised to refund everyone’s money. But later it is seen that postmaster is able to pay some depositors but still about 35 to 40 deports are not paid till now. When the depositors contacted, he is neglecting them with excuses.
Even on June 5 last, when the depositors went to Dharmanagar police station, the police arrested him. Even there, the prominent people of the village brought the accused Ajit Kumar Sinha from Dharmanagar police station after talking about compromise. But the post office has been closed for three or four months now as there is no proper solution. He is not visiting the post office regularly and meanwhile all the depositors are protesting at his house.
Recently, some depositors attacked Ajit Kumar Sinha’s house and found him at home, but no problem was solved. So the customers once again made a written request to the higher authority i.e. Superintendent of Dharmanagar Head Post Office and deputation to return the amount due to them.
Due to the incident, there has been extreme disappointment among all the depositors in the area. The residents of the area fear that an incident may occur at any time if the matter is not resolved properly.
