Agartala, 11th December 2025:   A massive fire broke out late last night at Muhuripur Market under Santirbazar subdivision, destroying at least six residential houses and a ration shop. Preliminary estimates suggest losses running into several lakhs of rupees. Local residents have urged the administration to provide immediate relief to the affected families.

According to local sources, the blaze is believed to have started from a ration shop in the market before quickly spreading to nearby houses. On receiving information, residents contacted the Jolaibari fire service and attempted to douse the flames themselves. However, the fire soon spiraled out of control.

Residents alleged that the Jolaibari fire brigade failed to reach the spot on time, which allowed the fire to spread further. They claimed that the fire service vehicle arrived without sufficient water supply and lacked fuel for its generator, hampering firefighting efforts.

Several locals also accused some fire personnel of negligence, alleging they were intoxicated and behaved inappropriately with residents during the operation.

Following the incident, fire brigades from Hrishyamukh, Belonia, Sabroom, and Santirbazar rushed to the site. Personnel from the 9th Battalion of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) also joined the rescue and firefighting operations. Together, they managed to bring the blaze under control, though the extent of damage is still being assessed.

Meanwhile, residents have appealed to the authorities for urgent assistance to rehabilitate those who lost their homes and belongings in the fire.

On the other hand, the District Magistrate & Collector, South Tripura visited Muhuripur to inspect the devastation caused by yesterday’s fire that damaged several shops and houses. The DM interacted with the affected families, assessed the losses on the ground, and assured all necessary support and rehabilitation measures. The District Administration stands firmly with all affected families during this difficult time.
