Dharmanagar faces severe flooding after overnight rains

Agartala, 20th August 2024:   The city of Dharmanagar has been severely affected by continuous rainfall since Monday evening, leading to widespread flooding and the evacuation of residents from various areas.

The North District Headquarters in Dharmanagar has experienced light but persistent rain, resulting in significant waterlogging. Large swathes of land along the India-Bangladesh border have been submerged, causing extensive damage to farmland. “Farmers are devastated,” said a local resident. “Their fields are completely underwater, and they have lost their crops.”

In the Shibbari Rhamar area, ten families have been relocated to a refugee camp due to severe flooding. Efforts to contact the Sub-Divisional Magistrate for assistance were initially unsuccessful. However, local youth clubs managed to alert the fire service, which deployed a rescue boat from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office. “The rescue operation is ongoing,” reported a member of the fire service team.

The main road of Dharmanagar-Kailashahar and the Signal slums are also heavily inundated. Residents, particularly young volunteers from local clubs, have been actively involved in rescue efforts. “We are doing everything we can to help our neighbors,” said one volunteer.

Several neighborhoods, including Nayapara, Rajbari’s Mandap Para, and Jail Road, are completely submerged. Many residents have sought refuge in the homes of relatives situated on higher ground. “The city is in chaos,” described a local shopkeeper. “People are staying indoors, trying to stay safe.”

Attempts to reach the Sub-Divisional Magistrate have been futile. Meanwhile, the Juri and Kakri rivers have swollen, with water levels rising above the danger mark. “If the rain continues for another three hours, we could face a major flood,” warned a local official. Refugee camps are being prepared to accommodate displaced residents.

The situation is dire not only for humans but also for livestock. “Our cattle are in danger,” lamented a farmer. “We are worried about our land and whether we will receive any government aid.”

As Dharmanagar grapples with the aftermath of the rains, the community’s resilience and solidarity shine through.
