Agartala, 10th March 2026: Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy today highlighted the need to empower girls through education and self-reliance, saying that an independent and confident mother can guide her children toward becoming responsible and self-sufficient individuals.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the state-level programme marking International Women’s Day at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala.
Addressing the gathering, Roy said education plays a vital role in enabling mothers to nurture and guide their children effectively. At the same time, self-reliance helps women build confidence and pass on values of independence to the next generation.
He stressed that families should support girl children not only in pursuing formal education but also in becoming financially and socially independent. According to the minister, society must create an environment where girls develop confidence and can live with dignity and respect.
Roy also spoke about various initiatives undertaken by the Central and State governments to support women’s development in Tripura. He noted that the number of women’s Self-Help Groups and “Lakhpati Didis” in the state has been increasing steadily due to these programmes.
The minister added that women from Tripura are now achieving recognition at both national and international levels. He also called on citizens to remain aware and work collectively to prevent social problems such as child marriage and deaths linked to early motherhood.
During the event, Roy virtually launched the pilot project Nari Adalat, introduced by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. In the initial phase, the initiative will be implemented in ten gram panchayats across the state.
He also virtually laid the foundation stone for a recreation centre for persons with disabilities at Ujan Abhaynagar, within the premises of the Social Welfare and Social Education Department in Agartala.
Chairperson of the Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Jayanti Debbarma, also addressed the programme. She urged parents and citizens to take an active role in preventing child marriage and eliminating the dowry system from society.
