Doctor shortage cripples services at RGM SDH in Kailashahar

Date:

Agartala, 26th April 2026 :   Healthcare services at the RGM Sub-Divisional Hospital in Kailashahar, the headquarters of Unakoti district, have been thrown into disarray due to an acute shortage of doctors, triggering widespread concern among patients and their families.

According to reports, the crisis deepened after the recent transfer of two Medical Officers from the hospital without any immediate replacement. The situation has further worsened as the Sub-Divisional Medical Officer (SDMO), Papia Rudra Pal, is currently away pursuing higher studies. Despite the growing pressure on healthcare services, no fresh appointments have been made by the Health Department to fill the vacant positions.

At present, the hospital is functioning with a limited number of doctors under the supervision of SDMO Dr. Dwaipayan Roy. Although specialist doctors are officially posted, sources allege that irregular attendance has led to a serious gap between sanctioned strength and actual service delivery. As a result, available specialists are being compelled to handle general patients, particularly in the emergency department, stretching resources thin.

Patients and their attendants have expressed frustration over prolonged waiting hours and the lack of timely medical care. Many claim that essential services are being compromised, leaving them with little choice but to suffer or seek treatment elsewhere.

The hospital, located in the heart of Kailashahar, caters to a large population in the region. For many, traveling to the distant district hospital is both time-consuming and physically challenging.

In response to the deteriorating situation, local residents have demanded immediate intervention from the authorities, urging the government to appoint adequate medical staff and restore normal healthcare services at the earliest.
