Agartala, 24th February 2026: A suspected dog smuggling operation has resurfaced in the state, causing alarm among residents of the Chakmaghat Champlai area under Mungiakami Police Station jurisdiction.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, four to five local dogs were found tied inside jute bags and abandoned in the nearby forest, allegedly for smuggling purposes.

The distressing discovery was made by vigilant citizens who promptly informed the Mungiakami police. A rescue team, along with volunteers from local animal welfare organization Pawsome, rushed to the site and successfully rescued the animals. The dogs have since been taken to a secure shelter and are reportedly in stable condition.

Local residents have expressed deep concern, claiming that the area has long been targeted by animal smugglers. Names such as Lonsa Tripura and Badal Debbarma have reportedly surfaced in connection with the illicit trade, according to locals who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“This smuggling ring has been active here for a while. If authorities and conservation groups are not vigilant, it could grow into a much larger operation,” said one resident.

The community’s outcry has intensified following the latest incident, with calls for stricter enforcement and decisive action against those involved in the illegal trade of local dogs. Conscious citizens highlighted that the quick response of the police and Pawsome likely saved the animals’ lives, but emphasized that more robust preventive measures are now urgently needed.

“This incident clearly shows that the dog smuggling network, referred to locally as the Sarmeya smuggling ring, is active again in Tripura,” a community activist said. “We demand strong legal action against the perpetrators.”

Meanwhile, Mungiakami police have confirmed the rescue operation and stated that an investigation is underway. No official statement has yet been released regarding any arrests or further developments.

Residents and animal rights advocates alike are urging the administration to act swiftly to dismantle the smuggling network and prevent future cruelty to animals in the region.
