Agartala, 3rd June 2025: Panic has gripped Bishalgarh following two back-to-back robberies within just 45 minutes yesterday evening, including a daring vehicle theft right from the front of the police station. Even after 24 hours, the police have failed to trace the robbers or the Rs 11.5 lakh stolen from a resident. In a surprising twist, police officials appear more focused on investigating the source of the money rather than the robbery itself.
It is reported that, Harej Mia of Motinagar village had sold ancestral property inherited from his in-laws in Nabinagar to fund his son’s foreign education. Yesterday afternoon, while returning home with Rs 11.5 lakh in cash alongside his son Sagar Mia, they were intercepted by four armed robbers on two motorbikes near Gokulnagar Abhay Ashram at 5 PM. The assailants armed with pistols and sharp weapons looted the cash at gunpoint.
Just 45 minutes later, another shocking incident took place where a Bolero vehicle bearing registration number AS17H-0712 belonging to the Officer-in-Charge of the Women’s Police Station Shiuli Das was stolen from right outside the Bishalgarh police station. The driver Shashikanta Reang was assaulted and the vehicle keys were snatched from him. Reang promptly filed a case naming the culprits. The vehicle was later recovered 22 hours later near the Bangladesh border in Beluarchar village under Boxanagar police station.
While addressing a press conference at Bishalgarh Police Station this afternoon, Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma described the recovery of the vehicle as a “major success.” However, he admitted that none of the accused had been arrested yet. “The accused is absconding. We are investigating the origin of the Rs 11.5 lakh. It is not advisable to keep such a large amount in cash,” he said, shifting focus from the robbery to the victim’s finances.
Meanwhile, sensational information has emerged from locals. Sources claim the carjacking incident may be linked to smuggling activities. Yesterday afternoon, the BSF reportedly chased a smuggler from Ghanimara. To evade capture, the smugglers allegedly stole the OC’s vehicle during the chaos, transporting their contraband across the border using the stolen Bolero.
“The carjacker has protection from influential quarters. Despite multiple cases against him, police have not arrested him. Even when the villagers blocked the road and submitted a deputation, the police remained helpless,” said a local villager.
The local MLA, who visited the police station post-incident, had reportedly given authorities a 24-hour deadline to arrest the culprits. With that deadline now expired and no arrests made, residents are anxiously watching the next move.
