Agartala, 4th July 2025: A persistent drainage crisis in Ward No. 5 of the Kumarghat Municipal Council has left nearly 25 families grappling with knee-deep water every monsoon, igniting public frustration and raising serious questions over civic preparedness and governance.
Despite repeated appeals, residents allege that the municipal administration has failed to address the chronic waterlogging issue plaguing their locality. Streets remain flooded after each downpour, severely impacting daily life, mobility, and public health.
“Around 25 families live near my house, and we’ve been dealing with knee-deep water for years now. Children can’t go to school, taking patients to hospitals becomes a nightmare, and even basic errands turn into a struggle,” said local resident Dev Singh Debbarma.
According to Debbarma, the matter was raised with the Kumarghat Municipal Council prior to the monsoon. He claimed to have submitted a written complaint and even approached the Chairperson personally. “The Chairperson assured us the issue would be seriously looked into. But nothing has changed. We are forced to speak out publicly now. Day after day, we walk through flooded roads. The rainwater has no way to drain out and flows directly into our homes,” he added with visible frustration.
The consequences are not limited to inconvenience. Residents are increasingly concerned about the outbreak of vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria due to stagnant water, which has turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
So far, there has been no official response from the Kumarghat Municipal Council. However, residents remain hopeful that media attention might spur authorities into action. Many believe the benefits of what is often referred to as the “double engine” government are yet to trickle down to neglected wards like theirs.
