Agartala, 6th June 2025: The ongoing drainage construction under the Smart City Mission in Agartala has sparked concern as new areas, previously unaffected by waterlogging, are now experiencing severe flooding. In particular, Durga Chowmuhani Bazar, a bustling commercial hub, has witnessed unprecedented inundation following recent rains, drawing sharp criticism from local traders and residents.
Business owners in the area have alleged that the new covered drainage system has failed to address core issues. “Though the drains have been covered, the underlying sluices haven’t been removed. This is causing a major blockage and water has nowhere to go,” said one affected trader. Many shops remain waterlogged, disrupting daily operations and causing financial strain on small businesses.
Responding to the complaints, Ward No. 18 Corporator Abhishek Datta, along with officials from the Smart City project, visited the site today to review the situation firsthand. Datta admitted that his visit was in response to persistent grievances from both residents and shopkeepers.
“I understand the distress caused to the people here. While development and beautification are important, we must ensure that such projects don’t end up creating new problems,” Datta said, assuring that corrective measures would be undertaken to prevent further inconvenience and balance infrastructure growth with practical functionality.
