Agartala, 6th June 2025: Panic gripped IGM Hospital yesterday after two elevators malfunctioned while descending from the sixth floor, leaving patients and their relatives trapped for nearly 90 minutes.
According to eyewitnesses, the elevators suddenly halted mid-descent, reportedly getting stuck at the top floors. With no operator present in the lifts at the time, the trapped individuals were left helpless, sparking distress and confusion.
“One of our family members was inside the elevator. There was no operator, no communication—just silence. We were terrified,” said a relative of a patient undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Rescue personnel had to break the elevator’s glass panel to communicate with those inside before a safe evacuation could be carried out. The situation turned more serious when one of the trapped individuals reportedly fainted upon being rescued.
Surprisingly, even after the ordeal, there was still no sign of any elevator operator, intensifying public outrage. As one of Tripura’s primary healthcare facilities, IGM Hospital is expected to maintain high safety standards. However, this incident has cast serious doubts over the hospital’s operational preparedness and emergency response mechanisms.
“This kind of negligence is unacceptable. We entrust our lives to this hospital,” said another angry family member.
