Agartala, 11th September 2024:   A large group of small and big vehicle drivers fed up with alleged police harassment gheraoed the Bishramganj police station on Wednesday afternoon. The protest was sparked by what the motorists described as relentless fines and demands for bribes by the police officers.

“Fine after fine after fine. If a driver doesn’t have the money for the fine, then he has to pay a bribe, sometimes even in the form of water and Meghna bidi,” said one of the protesting drivers. The drivers claim that Bishramganj police station is the most corrupt in the state, with officers exploiting drivers to the point of desperation.

The situation escalated as the angry drivers gathered outside the police station, demanding answers. “We have to answer today, otherwise we will bring all our cars inside the police station and set them on fire. We are fed up with their oppression,” one of the protesters told a news correspondent.

Inside the police station, officers were reportedly in a state of panic, discussing how to handle the situation. Eventually, they were forced to engage in dialogue with the leaders of the protest. In an attempt to defuse the tension, the police promised that such behavior would not be repeated in the future.

After the discussions, the protesters dispersed, but not without issuing a stern warning. “If they do it again, we will block the national highway,” they declared.

The incident has highlighted the growing frustration among motorists over alleged police misconduct and has raised serious questions about the integrity of law enforcement in the area.
