Drug peddler arrested in Sonamura

Agartala, 16th August 2025:  Sonamura police on Monday arrested a drug peddler and recovered 12 kg 500 grams of dried marijuana from his bike while he was allegedly attempting to smuggle the consignment to Bangladesh.

Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura Police Station, Tapas Das, informed that the accused has been identified as Abul Khair (25), a resident of Naldhepa, Motinagar under Sonamura Police Station in Sepahijala district.

Police sources said the seized marijuana is sold in Bangladesh for around Tk 2,000 per kilogram, which fetches a much higher price of nearly Tk 2.5 lakh per kilogram once it reaches there.

Das said that based on preliminary interrogation, a lot of vital information has been obtained and more arrests are likely in connection with this case from the region.

The accused was produced before the court today, where police sought remand for further investigation.
