Agartala, 8th June 2026: . Alleging large-scale irregularities in the implementation of development projects, activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Monday staged a protest at the Kamalasagar Gram Panchayat office after reportedly uncovering instances of corruption in two public welfare schemes.
According to DYFI leaders from the Kamalasagar area, a surprise inspection was carried out at the Panchayat office around 2 pm following complaints regarding the construction of a filtered drinking water facility at Debipur Market and renovation work at a community hall near Debipur School.
During the inspection, DYFI members alleged that the community hall renovation was carried out in a highly substandard manner despite the Block administration sanctioning Rs 1,59,687 for the project. They claimed that only a few new tin sheets had been installed on the roof while the old damaged sheets, riddled with holes, were merely painted over. The organization alleged that a major portion of the sanctioned funds had been misappropriated instead of being utilized for proper repair work.
The youth organization also raised serious objections to the drinking water tank project, alleging that the filtration system failed to meet basic standards. According to DYFI leaders, carbon filters were found wrapped in polythene and the tank developed leaks within days of installation. Traders reportedly complained that the water emitted a foul smell and was unfit for consumption.
The allegations led to a heated protest at the Panchayat office, where DYFI activists also accused Panchayat officials, including Secretary Debajyoti Bhattacharya, of frequently remaining absent from duty, causing inconvenience to local residents seeking public services.
During the confrontation, the Panchayat Secretary reportedly acknowledged deficiencies in both projects and assured the protesters that fresh estimates for the community hall would be submitted to higher authorities. DYFI leaders, however, warned that unless corrective measures are taken immediately, they will launch a large-scale agitation and gherao the Panchayat office in the coming days.
