Education Department Orders Full Compliance with Weekly Teaching Hours in Schools

Date:

Agartala, 18th June 2026:   The Directorate of Secondary Education, Government of Tripura, has issued a strict directive to all government schools, reinforcing compliance with prescribed weekly teaching workloads for both administrative staff and teachers.

In a memorandum released from Shiksha Bhavan, Agartala, the department expressed concern over continued non-adherence to mandated teaching duties and the failure of several schools to properly include required teaching hours in their timetables.

Referring once again to earlier notifications issued on 29 May 2003, the department has clarified the weekly teaching responsibilities for school personnel. According to the directive, Headmasters, Headmistresses, Principals, Assistant Headmasters, Assistant Headmistresses, and Vice-Principals are required to take at least 11 teaching periods per week, excluding tutorial duties.

Assistant teachers must conduct a minimum of 25 teaching periods weekly, along with 11 additional tutorial periods dedicated to academic support work such as homework correction and related responsibilities. Senior academic administrators like Assistant Headmasters and Vice-Principals are also required to handle at least 22 periods per week.

The department has emphasized that these norms must be implemented without exception and fully integrated into school schedules. District Education Officers and Inspectors of Schools have been directed to closely monitor compliance and ensure that all institutions follow the rules in both practice and intent.

The move is intended to strengthen academic discipline and ensure more effective use of teaching time across government schools in the state.
