Agartala, 27th June 2026: A crucial meeting of the Electricity Employees Federation of India (EEFI) representing the Northeastern states was held in Agartala on Saturday, marking the first such regional-level meeting in Tripura. The meeting was chaired by EEFI National Vice-President Subhash Lamba, with representatives from Meghalaya, Assam, Odisha, Tripura, and West Bengal participating.
The meeting discussed several major issues concerning the power sector, including the proposed Electricity (Amendment) Bill of the Central Government, privatization of power distribution companies, implementation of Labour Codes, restoration of the Old Pension Scheme, wage revision, and challenges faced by regular and contractual employees.
Addressing the gathering, Subhash Lamba said that despite opposition from around 2.7 million power sector employees, farmers, and electricity consumers across the country, the government was moving ahead with plans to introduce the Electricity (Amendment) Bill in Parliament. He stressed the need for a united and strong movement to protect the public character of the power sector and safeguard consumer interests.
EEFI leader in charge of Northeastern states, Arindam Roy, presented the agenda of the meeting. EEFI Vice-Presidents Bela Patra and Pranay Nayak, Tripura Electricity Employees’ Union President Ranabir Roy, General Secretary Subrata Ganguly, and other leaders were present.
Before the meeting, Tripura Employees Coordination Committee (TECC) Chairman Ranjit Rudra Pal and General Secretary Mahua Roy welcomed the delegates with mementos.
The meeting unanimously decided to launch a wide public awareness campaign against the Electricity (Amendment) Bill and privatization policies. A two-week statewide campaign will be organized in July, followed by a major sit-in demonstration outside electricity department offices in August.
The participants also decided to involve employees, their families, students, youth, women, farmers’ organizations, and electricity consumers in the movement through extensive outreach and social media campaigns.
A state-level conference focusing on contractual workers’ issues will be held by August 31, with preparations for a possible nationwide contractual workers’ strike in October-November. The EEFI also announced plans to intensify nationwide resistance if the Electricity (Amendment) Bill is passed, including a possible multi-day movement in November-December under the banner of NCCOEEE.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue a united struggle to protect employee rights, prevent privatization, and ensure affordable and quality electricity services for the public.
