Agartala, 30th August 2025:    In a case that has sparked outrage and soul-searching over the state of familial values, a 90-year-old woman was brought to the Belonia court in a wheelchair after her eldest son filed a legal suit against her over property ownership.

Urmila Patari, a mother of six- two sons and four daughters has lived in the Santirbazar market-adjacent area for decades. Fourteen years back, she lost her husband and began managing her affairs independently. She continued living in the family home with her two sons, Shankar Patari and Samar Patari.

According to Urmila, she had entrusted her eldest son Shankar with renting out a shop in front of their house to help cover her living expenses. However, she later found that Shankar had allegedly transferred ownership of the property to his own name using her thumbprint, without her informed consent. The deception came to light when she asked for the rental income and found the property was no longer legally hers.

Following a local arbitration, the documents were corrected and the property was restored to Urmila. Since then, her younger son Samar and daughter Tandra have taken on the responsibility of caring for her. But tensions escalated when Shankar, reportedly upset over the reversal, filed a fresh lawsuit against his mother, brother and nephew dragging the nonagenarian into a legal battle.

On the day of the hearing, Urmila had to be physically wheeled into the courtroom, a sight that moved onlookers and court staff alike. While the legal proceedings will follow due process, public sentiment has been overwhelmingly critical of Shankar’s actions, with many labeling him a “disgraced son in gentleman’s clothing.”

Despite the ordeal, Urmila has not filed any formal complaint against her son. Her quiet dignity in the face of betrayal has led many to reflect on the age-old truth: while there may be wayward children, there are rarely unloving parents.
