Agartala, 31st December 2025:  An elderly woman from Kaliram Para in the constituency of Minister Kishore Barman has alleged that her electricity bill skyrocketed to Rs 9,821 after the installation of a smart meter, leaving her distressed and helpless.

The complaint was raised by local resident Naithakti Jamatia, who said that the elderly woman had been using electricity normally for years, with monthly bills typically ranging between Rs 100 and Rs 200. However, soon after a smart meter was installed at her residence, she received an unusually high bill, which she says is impossible for her to pay.

According to Jamatia, such a high electricity bill had never been issued before the smart meter was installed, raising serious doubts about the meter reading or billing calculation. The elderly woman has appealed to the electricity department and the concerned administration to investigate the matter and take appropriate action.

The incident has triggered anger and concern among local residents as well. They fear that if such abnormal bills continue to be issued after the installation of smart meters, it will become extremely difficult for ordinary people to bear the financial burden. The authorities are yet to respond officially to the complaint.
