Elderly woman alleges humiliation over allowance request in Agartala

Agartala, 6th  June 2026:  An elderly widow from the Lankamura area under Ward No. 1 of the Agartala Municipal Corporation has alleged that she was humiliated while seeking assistance for a government allowance, triggering concern among local residents.

Ashu Sarkar, approximately 70 years old, claimed that she has been struggling to survive since the death of her husband nearly a decade ago. According to her, the family’s financial condition has worsened over the years, with her only son also suffering from illness. Facing difficulties in arranging food, medicines and other basic necessities, she repeatedly approached local councilor Mitra Majumdar for help in obtaining a government allowance.

Speaking to the media, Sarkar alleged that instead of receiving assistance, she was repeatedly turned away whenever she raised the issue. She further claimed that during one visit to the councilor’s residence, she was driven away and subjected to disrespectful treatment.

The allegations have sparked discussion in the locality, with several residents expressing concern over the plight of the elderly woman. Many have called for an impartial inquiry into the matter and urged the authorities to ensure immediate support and welfare benefits for her.

No response from Councilor Mitra Majumdar regarding the allegations could be obtained despite efforts to contact her. ‘
